Woman driving, man sleeping
With a suitcase on the rack
White lines shooting by
On the pavement like the sky
Looking straight ahead into the black
Woman driving, man sleeping
There's no radio to play
Sitting with the map
Laying crumpled on her lap
Looking for the toll money to pay
Man sleeping is man dreaming
In a large apartment house
Walking and knocking on doors
Woman driving, man sleeping
Passing all the other cars
Searching in the black
But never turning to look back
A little metal box under the stars
Man sleeping is man dreaming
In a large apartment house
Walking and knocking on doors
Woman driving, man sleeping
With a suitcase on the rack
White lines shooting by
On the pavement like the sky
Looking straight ahead into the black
Woman driving, man sleeping
There's no radio to play

Man sleeping is man dreaming

I really enjoyed this short piece by Wim Wenders. Here's the 11 min version (including the last 2 minutes).

Funny enough - I met both Wim and E at an Easter party in the Hollywood hills. Wim and I have had shared "near death experiences"... E was just a cool guy that introduced himself to me that I didn't know who he was until a few days later.

I hear a bit of Michael Penn's "No Myth"

This is the theme music of "Twelve miles to Trona", a short story, where a man lost in a vast almost empty place, finds himself having an accidental overdose, without knowing what from - in his run to find a way to get assistance he drives through windmills fields, with this music as a background, it's fantastic and psychedelic.

That cover with the album name. Brilliant.
Seems like this could be a prequel to Matchbox 20's Rest Stop, "I don't care if you are dreaming about a large apartment house, gtf out!"
"...A little metal box under the stars..."
Hello Ruby in the dust
Wonderful - gets a 9 from me

unfortunately the last 20 seconds or so are missing in the link I posted when it's actually necessary. I found the 2 ten minutes older dvds again, will try to upload this movie soon.

Groovy little tune that has really grown on me....
Glad the album title is spelled 'Soul' and not 'Sole'.

Still looking for that off-the-hook rap album, bro.
You have been successfully trolled by Joaquin Phoenix.

Love this song - evokes the 'ten minutes older" short movie by Wim Wenders, 12 miles to Trona, especially the part in the desert with the psychedelics windmills

Beautiful song, but as I have listened more it lacks something lyrically. It is similar to CAKE's "Alpha Beta Parking Lot," but is missing a key line such. For CAKE the line is "Watching you leave me, not quite believing."
There is nothing in this song that tells us why they are driving, what or who they are fleeing... there's no reason to care.

See many comments about confusing Eels to Beck, sure the vibe is similar but think both is unique enough to not confuse the two.

Not one song like the other!! Very nice!
Reminds me of the Wim Wenders Ten minutes Older movie, "Twelve Miles To Trona". This beautiful song matches the journey of the character perfectly. So sad I lost the DVDs...
Love the Eels...I'm kinda worried for the dog though.
DJ working, listener grooving.
Man I miss this record, an old girlfriend made off with it. Damn, she had good taste....
I'd follow this with Del Amitri "Driving with the Brakes On."
Similar feel & tempo. And theme.

Love this song.
Lyrics Garrison Keillor would love...
Now I want to hear Bakerman is baking bread.

I heard this playing at the breeze bar at Treasure Island in Vegas last week. I was quite surprised to hear it other than on RP.
Love (the) Eels.
Perfectly conveys those long road trips, doesn't it?

Evocative.

The first time I dropped by RP I caught the last of "Novocaine for the Soul," and now come back every day to see what else is on the playlist.
I think it's poetry... painting a picture with a few carefully chosen words and minimalist but effective music.
"Woman driving, man sleeping"
passing all the other cars
searching in the black

Sit back and think of a the little details your mind adds to the picture without the lyrics saying more. A setting, a story, a mystery. From just five lines.

This is probably my favorite of the album, which I bought after hearing a few of their songs on RP.

Who knew the Unabomber created "A look" in men's fashion.
The Unabomber was a media creation. Whether Ted Krazinsky was responsible, an actual person, who wore a hoodie like many, is not as clear to me. Did the authorities recover a hoodie from the cabin in the woods where Ted dwelled? Did Ted own a pair of aviator glasses? The connection between the victims seems tenuous and forced. The Manifesto might be his while the crimes may not be. As was part of the prosecutions case, Krazinsky was not well and may have just capitalized on the circumstances to have the New York Times publish his Manifesto.
