Your mama never told you
how you were s'posed to treat a girl
Your papa never told you
now you're alone, out in the world
Sirens are screaming
inside the winding sheets are pale
The devils are dreaming,
dreaming of a blue angel
Now I lay me down to sleep
but troubled dreams are all I find
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
I pray so I won't lose my mind
Streetlights come streaming
on wings tonight I'll soon set sail
The devils are dreaming,
dreaming of a blue angel
Your mama's gonna take it hard
you always were your mama's boy
You're lying in the graveyard
now you're not your mama's joy
Silence is screaming
i'll bat an eye and cast my spell
The devil's are dreaming,
dreaming of a blue angel
The devil's are dreaming,
dreaming of a blue angel
The devil's are dreaming,
dreaming of a blue angel
The devil's are dreaming.

EXCELLENT! Thanx RP

Perfectly reasonable choice: you make a band with a swinging 20s-30s sound that's not too proud to be a bit silly and make fun of themselves and just have fun. So you name the band after a slightly silly candy from the 1920s
Would I ever love to be present in the discussion between band members as to the name they want to use!!!!

One Lady Day was enough.

This is probably SNZ's most complete song, though I also like "Put A Lid On It" from this album. Great stuff.

A kind friend had given me the entire album in mp3 - ripped from his 1996 minidisc haha! Unfortunately, years passed, I went from computer to computer and ended up losing my music folder.
Since this CD is no longer available, I'm very happy to hear it again here :)

Was somewhat obsessed with this album when it came out. After almost 25 years, it's still really good!

They sound better when she doesn't sing.
Awesome! I love Amy Winehouse! Wait...what? It's who? Ok, never mind

I've seen that explanation and also that "Nut Zippers" is a southern term for a variety of old bootleg moonshine. The band's name comes from a newspaper story about an intoxicated man who climbed a tree and refused to come down even after police arrived. The headline was "Squirrel Nut Zipper."

Katharine Whalen likely sung this--as the only female in the lineup.
Andrew Bird on violin guitar
Billie Holiday!! Wait...no, not old enough. Amy Winehouse!! Wait...before her time...Okay, I'm confused.
please leave Lady Day alone. The poor girl suffered enough

Superb track, a great change from Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd

I suppose they're not singing about setting farts on fire like we did in boy scout camp, "I dare ya ta blow a blue angel!"

Two others have already responded to this, but I couldn't resist. The singer's name is Katherine Whalen and she does hail from North Carolina as someone has already mentioned. And the other comment about Amy being about 12 when the album came out is also correct. I have the CD right in front of me. Bought it new at the time. 1996.
But wait! There's more. The violinist is none other than Andrew Bird.
Ha. I learn something new every day.
And fwiw, I like Put A Lid On It, and Hell off the "HOT" album.
You all DO know that the singer is the late Amy Winehouse singing with them under an assumed name?

Not so much now. Feel free to turn these squirrel nuts back into the wild.

I like the Zippers in general, and I kinda liked this one the first time I heard it...but on repeated listening, it just doesn't hold up for me.

Actually I liked it. Bit of Gin Wigmore / Amy Winehouse happening here. I'd buy the album.
I'M OUTTA HERE ON THIS ONE.

Heard this for the first time today...simply superb! Have bought "Lost at Sea" after listening to snippets of other tracks, can't wait for it to come.
Now this has got a good beat, right here.
So much music to dance to in this Friday ... and I am here stuck in my office!
so delicious!

Anything that evokes that wide and vague category of Gypsy Jazz makes my ears smile - thanks, Bill and Rebecca!
How funny! The Navy flying team the Blue Angels are doing (deafening!!) practice runs over my house right now, preparing for their big weekend show just across the bay at MacDill AFB in Tampa. I read in the local paper that they got their name from a bar... the "famous Blue Angel nightclub," in 1946!

They play this album when I'm on hold with GoDaddy. I will never ever be able to listen to this album again without feeling a sense of crisis and nausea.
It's nice to hear more SNZ. One of the best reasons to listen to radio is to find the stuff you missed while you were young and already knew it all.

I heard they got into trouble when the candy company got bought out and had to stop using the name. is this true? Anyway, thanks for playing SNZ Bill.

Huh, wonder if that's why my dad brought home this album... I remember he said something about the cover "calling out to him". I snagged it and took it off with me to school.
One of these days I need to give it back...
Thank you. More SNZ please.
This song should SO segue with Chocolate Jesus.
Little piece of useless trivia. Blue Angel was the name of the rockabilly band that Cindy Lauper began her career with. Still trying to get my hands on that album.
