Where is the ritual?
And tell me where, where is the taste?
Where is the sacrifice?
And tell me where, where is the faith?

Someday there'll be a cure for pain
That's the day I throw my drugs away
When they find a cure for pain

Where is the cave
Where the wise woman went?
And tell me where
Where's all that money that I spent?

I propose a toast
To my self control
You see it crawlin' helpless on the floor

Someday there'll be a cure for pain
That's the day I throw my drugs away
When they find a cure for pain

Thanks for sharing that excellent article.
I loved the music Morphine made, saw them live, but confess I figured his death was drug related.
Subsequently I watched the documentary "Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story"
While the doc did not delve into the possible causes of Mark's death, I believe it did NOTHING to hint his death was drug related; quite the contrary.
I enjoyed the documentary and felt like a jerk for pretty much assuming Sandman was a drug addict; the doc made it quite clear he was NOT.

From that same link:

"Affable and easy to deal with, Mark Sandman - the ill-fated leader of Morphine - made friends in Portugal, including radio broadcaster Nuno Calado, who met the musician shortly before his death."

"Calado would be with the band on the eve of boarding for the fateful concert in Italy and, when asked about Mark's "habits of consumption", reveals that "he always smoked various things", but that on the trip to Alentejo he had confided to him that he had stopped using drugs. "He wanted to have a clear head to make a change in Morphine's music." Even so, and according to Nuno Calado, everything indicates that Mark Sandman used cocaine on the night of the concert at Sony Square [in 1999, a few days before he died], in Parque das Nações: «As I know, he felt bad tonight"."

Here's a link to the article in the Portuguese magazine:

We need to hear some pre Morphine - Treat Her Right.  Maybe... I Think She Likes Me

First song I heard from Morphine about when this album was released.  Blew me away.  I propose a toast to RP.  Thanks for putting them in rotation here.  Cheers.

This outstanding track has such a unique sound.  Swing and groove.  The bass and sax together are just sublime!  The album is a joy!

Couldn't agree more. Can't tell the same about their other albums but this album is one of the best I've ever bought!
Nothing like bad ass SAX!

From the Wikipedia entry on Mark Sandman:
Sandman collapsed on stage on July 3, 1999 at the Giardini del Principe in Palestrina, Latium, Italy while performing with Morphine. His death, at the age of 46, was as a result of a heart attack. He was survived by his girlfriend Sabine Hrechdakian, parents Robert and Guitelle Sandman and sister Martha Holmes. Morphine disbanded following his death, although the surviving members briefly toured with other musicians, as Orchestra Morphine, a tribute to Sandman and in support of the posthumous release, The Night. His death has been attributed to cigarettes, heavy stress and the temperature of over 100 degrees on the night of his death.

Here are some things I've said before:

"I don't need to wear a condom, I mean, when am I going to be in West Africa again?"

"I know we just met in this bar, but if you say your cousin's a good contractor, that's all I need to hear."

"There's no way a black man will get elected President of the U.S. - not in a million years."

"Nobody wants to watch a show about mobsters. Their moral ambiguities just won't make for good drama."

And finally...

"Asians can't play basketball."
Always loved the combination of their instruments and vocals.

Medicate me baby
To the best of my knowledge, Mr Sandman was not a junkie, and as a listener commented, died of a heart attack associated with a congenital heart problem during a performance.

One of the best, if not THE best song from Morphine, IMHO.

Why?
Because your from the state of Morphine?

Kind of a back handed compliment, Can't say I disagree though. Love Morphine. One of the best small club shows I have ever seen!

I could see slow dancing to this if the stupid DJ had ever heard of Morphine. Just swaying in the arms of a hottie!!!!
love this song. Sandman was awesome. rip.
Great song Was lucky enough to see Morphine in a small venue in Cambridge, around 1994 or so. RIP Mark Sandman

Indeed. Bari is one of my two favorite Saxes. Tenor is the other. This song seems happier than their others. Am I imagining this? ;) edit: and the song ends with a Tenor! Cool.
This is one of their total best. I used to sing along in my car, or try to, anyway...Mark's bass voice was too much for my fragile alto.
Taken in a lot of shows in my day, Morphine at the Bowery Ballroom, NYC. Top 10 for sure.
I was suddenly thinking of a rather different song! Heeeey, hey baby, I wanna know, won't you be my girl?! Could be a cure for pain :-k
Time to get an actual guitar already!
these guys will always remind me of the mid 90's - "cure for pain" is a great disc.
Morphine was (I suppose with the possible exception of Radiohead) the first rock band of the 21st century (just a touch ahead of their time). Their brand of "low pop" was a totally new sound for the gen X-ers who needed a reprive from the uninspired post-grunge cookie-cutter alt-rock dominating the radio. Personally, by the late '90's I needed a reminder of the days of the inventive mid-to-late '80's fringe and alternative pop-rock I loved along with the shadow of the of the slinking opiate swagger of the post-punk late '70's CBGB's scene. Mark Sandman's lyrics were spiked with the ironic humor of Morrisey with the dark, soulful vocalese of Matt Johnson (The The) or David Sylvian. The music was unlike anything I heard before and like everything I loved before (stretching the preconceptions of what a three-piece rock band was supposed to sound like (this was not Rush or the Police or Husker Du). Drums, baritone sax and a bizarre, homemade three-string slide bass?!? A guitarless blend of the Smiths and Television and John Coltrane-- never heard that before and never will again. I miss this band (and most importantly Mark Sandman) more than any other (except maybe the Beatles), but it's influence still lingers with bands like the Strokes as well as groups trying to build a cross-over trip-hop/rock movement. I posit that Morphine is as much responsible for the success of the movement that brought us the Strokes and Spoon et al. as were Television and Iggy Pop by reintroducing what I like to call down-beat "smack" rock. Suffice it to say then that I liked 'em . . . a lot.
Morphine came in from nowhere in the early nineties and flat out blew me away. Unlike anything I'd heard--melodic, sparse arrangements, that gutteral low-end growl of the two-string bass, sinewy and steamy tales of love gone wrong or elsewhere. It was as cerebral as primal. Smart and sexy. Sandman was a real innovator. The sound of no guitars rocking. May his legacy live on for the enjoyment of generations to come.
Great band, too bad...
I, like some others, was late to the party for these guys. This album is incredible. "Cure For Pain", "Buena" and "In Spite Of Me" are all GIANT favorites of mine. "Let's Take a Trip Together" and "I'm Free Now" are excellent also. I wish I would have gotten to know them a little earlier. Wish Sandman was still around, also.
Morphine should be a staple on RadioParadise. They play anything remotely bad?? That\'s a big NO! Let\'s up the dosage ;)

such a shame we\'ll never hear/see any more from marc & morphine-- please keep playing more here!
Now all I need is a Cure for Sitting at a Computer... That\'s the daaaaaaay, I\'ll throw my keyboard away! Thanks Bill-great song
call me stupid... when i first heard this back in \'94, i thought it was joey ramone!?!!?? sorry. but that was good, i always liked the ramones. this turned me on to morphine which is a good thing too! unfortunatly, now they\'re both gone.
My girlfriend turned me on to a lot of good music - we drove up to Berkley to see Morphine a while back only to find the concert had been cancelled. Later that tour... well, you know. Major bummer, I heard they did a great show. Check out \"Treat Her Right\" if you can\'t get enough.
More-phine. What a tragedy that Marc Sandman died. At least, unlike a lotr of other casualties (Hendrix, Morrison, etc.) he died on stage doing what he loved, instead of drowning in his own barf. Sandman created his own sound. Most people never get to that point.
baritone sax, 2-string fretless bass, and drums... what more do you need? :D
