I live on a chain
And you share the same last name
As a joke
I sent a bottle of whiskey
As you choked
You said it made you feel dirty
And I was waiting over here for life to begin
I was looking for the new thing
And you were the sunshine
Headed my front-line
I was alone
You were just around the corner from me.
Time alone is good
I spend my days in the city
Dirty neighborhood
You know you'll never convince me
So I sold the town away
I couldn't wait to forget you
Was killed in half a day
I hadn't time to regret you
And I was waiting over here for life to begin
I was looking for the new thing
And you were the sunshine
Headed my front line
I was alone
You were just around the corner from me.
Yeah
I, I'm still on the chain
And you
Had the same last name
As a joke I sent a bottle of whiskey
As you choked
You said it made you feel dirty
Waiting over here, for life to begin,
Still looking for the new thing
And you were the sunshine
Headed my front-line
I was alone
You were just around the corner from me.

This was a staple in my family's car CD rotation when growing up, happy memories!

Pete Yorn is one of those guys I heard a little of back in the day and decided was mediocre pap. I really like this song, though, so now I have to reevaluate. Curse you, RP!

Wow, seriously? In that they are both classified as music?

Adequate song from a brilliant album.
Great song. Unique to my ear. Keep it coming Bill.

Still dancing
God I love this song so much! And him. One of my all time faves...even had my 3 year old dancing with me to that one while cooking dinner.
Love this song and him so much! Not sure why everybody doesn't know him! Never will get tired of it. Thanks Radio P!
One of my fave albums

Great album! Love this tune! Glad to hear it on RP - haven't before....
Not hearing near as often just makes it that much more enjoyable!
I am thinking this isn't aging well.

Whoa... blast from the past. Saw him at Bottom of the Hill in SF back in the day. GREAT show.
How nostalgic! Another one of the original RP rotation songs!
I have this CD, and I love every song on it. I'm not the best candidate for objectivity, so I'll just say that every Pete Yorn song gets a 9 from me unless otherwise noted.

OOoooooo, nice greyfin10- Alliteration, pun and obscure reference to the Sid and Marty Kroft's Banana Splits Saturday morning cash in on the Monkees phenomena. Pete Yorn is perhaps the best indie singer songwriter to get instant sales and representation due to nepotism.
You know... Monkimus Prime... he morphed into a yellow gorilla I think.

I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers. That said, I swear the bass line in this song is a direct lift from "Judy in Disguise". Not that this is bad - I always liked that song. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judy_in_Disguise

Singalicious.
yucky annoying music
Okay - I'm just going to say it — could Pete be any more yummy? Oh, and he can write and sing, too!

I dig the hidden track on this album, can't remember the name, one of the tunes ends and there is silence for 30 seconds then a new tune starts, great song, but the track number does not change.

An here's some more trivia: the mother of Tork's bandmate Mike Nesmith invented Liquid Paper, whihc she sold to Gillette for close to $50 million. Whew! Memory almost full!
Good rock and roll. What more do you want?

Yorn/Tork---close enough!! At least their last names kind of sound alike (if not their voices).
I'd love to here Pete Yorn cover "Your Auntie Grizelda" on his next album...

This is one of only a few CDs that I have bought when it was released without any real familiarity with the artist/music. This one was based purely on reviews and recommendations. Thankfully, it worked out!

This sounds so much like an oldie called "Judy in Disguise" (or something phonetically very similar. . .)
I never noticed that. They are both peppy, I guess I just didnt notice because of the lack of horns in Yorn's song.
BTW, to here this song and see a guy dressed as an alien dance to it, check out Youtube...where else?!(click here)

I lost all respect of certain swedish artist after I found out he ripped this song off, note for note, without giving any credit to Pete Yorn. Bleh. I much rather stick with the original, which rocks!
Pete Yorn is doing a $5 show in Columbus next Friday, but I waited too long to buy tickets. I could just kick myself for not moving on that one faster!

His new album 'Nightcrawler' came out at the end of August.
Its sleating and snowing out in a drear Jersey town, but this song makes me think of sunny days in the city.

I loved this song the first time I heard it several years ago. Still haven't changed my opinion.
I enjoyed half of Pete's first album, tolerated the other half as there was a bit of 'sameness' to the individual songs.
Second album, as a whole, I like better from beginning to end.
Oh, Yeti Porn. Yeah, it does make a person feel silly, doesn't it? Love Pete Yorn, this song, and this CD. In fact, it's in my car right now - been listening to it pretty much nonstop for a week.
Heard this for like 2-3 years ago. Still as good as it were back then, and I keep listening to it now and then. Appelling soundpresentation, 9/10.

I didn't know he had a follow-up album out. Thanks for the "heads up," man!
Saw this dude live at the 9:30 (DC) a couple years back and it was a great show.

One of my favorite albums. Yes, very underrated artist.

I am not sure if I can give this any Joe Bob awards, but I think I know the inspiration... or perhaps the video. It has something to do with Eddie Vedder and Steve Martin doing doughnuts (brodies?) in the Duke Boys' orange General Lee in a big happy field of daisies.
OK... 3 laughing Joe Bobs
Please illuminate me.
Is this the same Joe Bob that I used to read in the Drive In Movie Reviews in the Dallas Observer back in the early nineties? As in Joe Bob Briggs? Our down home boy who can make you laugh out loud no matter what?

Can't stand this song. Whiney and repetitive. And a corny, everybody's done that before melody line. Reminds me of a yo-yo or scratched record on the "JUST arOUND the CORner FROM me" line. No more, please!
This one speaks to the post-divorce happy time when I finally met my future who literally (coincidentally) was "just around the corner from me" in a couple different ways. Great song! Great Artist (so underrated)! Great Live! Great CDs...we love it, we love it, we love it! Let's hear the "burrito song" from his newest CD next!!
one riff sounds sort of beach boys to me.
Great song to wake up this sleepy listener after lunch!

Is it me or is there a guitar riff buried in there, from, \"Judy in disguise\" by John Fred & His Playboy Band ?

This is the first time I\'ve heard \"Life on a Chain\" and I really like it. I\'m not a regular listener of Radio Paradise, so I guess I wouldn\'t mind hearing it once in a while, but it seems like many people don\'t care for it\'s current rotation level. Oh well
