Caught that show at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI.  Great venue and an incredible show!!!!
There is a live version on YouTube from the "Bloody Sunday Sessions" in New Orleans. It's Taj with his bass player and drummer riding around in a carriage playing this. It keeps getting taken down but I'm sure you can search it out - and it's well worth the hunt.

Love this guy! Have seen him many times back in the day when the Mariposa Folk Festival was held on Toronto Island. Such joy and charm emanates from him. I remember one special summer afternoon he was scheduled to play at one of the waterside stages on Centre Island when the heavens broke loose. We were all standing in pools, huddling under every available umbrella, wondering if the rain would ever let up or if the show would even go on. The stage was covered but for safety's sake the power was cut. Taj stepped out, greeted us all with warmth and enthusiasm and said 'let's get this show on the road!' And so he did an acoustic set, without any amplification, as the rain came pouring down. We had nowhere else to go and there was no better place to be! Honestly. he had all of our soppy, wet asses dancing in the rain!!! Grace under pressure? Pressure? What pressure?

Excellent story!  : )   Taj is Fab
Toured with Stones in 69 and 97. Nice segue.
Nice segue from Bonnie R.  Now I think something from David Lindley and Keb Mo would be puuuurfect.

Love the Taj!  Please play more.
Nice tune on a Saturday morning with possibility of snow coming in.

Thank you, Ulises, for the belly laugh.

And from my side, I cannot understand how I can respect this man's music without liking it at all.

Oh well, hope the rest of you are enjoying this. And Stingray, I hope you are enjoying your grumpiness.

Ran into him (I didn't recognize him or realize who he was until the next day) at the Austin TX Hilton years ago when I was out by the pool trying to play my 12-string. Handed it to him and he played a few tunes and later comped me tickets to his show. Very tall, calm, soft-spoken man.
Would love to see Taj or some of the old Chicago blues master live.  Unfortunately Vancouver is not the greatest venue.

Ahh! Sweet Taj! He's ma man! Such a powerfully engaging performer!

I remember seeing Taj front row live at Vancouver's Fabulous Commodore. He introduced this song by saying, "Here's one that all the ladies love."

He's right!
I've never eaten a honey bee, are they particularly sweet?  I would expect them to taste.... buggy. {#Sick}

You mean...Taj Mahal is not his real name?!

Taj gives great live shows agreed, and I really like how he shows his dues to the ordinary blues elders living in obscurity, amazing talents like Etta Baker, Cootie Stark, Cool John Ferguson and Beverly “Guitar” Watkins. Taj helps to promote and support them through his tireless work with the charitable "Music Maker Relief Foundation"

I love Taj Mahal's music. He just makes me smile, because he takes such joy in his craft, and it's reflected in the tone of his playing and singing. {#Bounce} (And why don't we have a "reggae banana" icon?)

Saw Taj in Aspen a few years ago...love his voice.

Ry Cooder used to play with Taj, replaced by Jesse Ed Davis.

Since Bill played this after the Stones, it's interesting to note that Keith Richards insisted on Taj playing on their ill-fated TV special, Rock 'N' Roll Circus. Lennon had a cameo, and is possibly how it came to pass that Jesse appeared on Lennon's Rock 'N' Roll LP years later. As for the Stones' film, you can rent it from your favorite mail-order DVD rental outfit.

It's also interesting to note that Ry is heard all over several Stones' recordings (read: Let It Bleed) and almost became a Stone until he and Keith had a disagreement as to who came up with a certain guitar riff.
Taj Mahal is a great artist.

That having been said, this is probably the worst song I've ever heard by him.

ok, I'll be first, who is Taj Mahal?

I haven't heard much of him, but I love what I've heard. Back in 74 or 75 I bought his album Oooh So Good 'n Blues and played it a lot. It has classics like "Dust my Broom", "Long Gone", and "Frankie and Albert" on it. Years later I stumbled across another recording of his, "Ain't That a Lot of Love," on The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, recorded in 1968 for a TV special that wasn't aired, released on CD in 1996 and on DVD in 2004. He's a genuine, sincere, no-frills folk blues musician who plays with a lot of feeling. Check out the Wikipedia entry for more.

Last summer I dropped a whole folder of Taj Mahal mp3s that my firend copied for me into my Winamp. This song was the one that stood out the most to me. I must have listened to it 50 times in a row. Just a great spring/summer vibe, I think.

Bought Kulanjan with Toumani Diabate - well worth it. Love his voice.
allow me to say that I really enjoy both Taj mahal and the malian stylings of Diabate and his counterparts (such as Ali Farka Toure). However, I really didn't like that particular Kulanjan album... seemed like they didn't put much effort into creating a collaboration of sounds before they went into the studio.
But if you REALLY want to hear him sing -check out the live acoustic version of "Crossing" -then check who wrote it
brings bak gret mem's of him playin @ anna banannas in honolulu in the 70's....soft tyms. alwyz a gud taj choice!

Ditto! Speaking of 35 years ago ... that's when I first heard West Indian Revelation, which I loved but never knew who or what it was until just last year. So I uploaded it to the LRC and it's currently in review to get on this playlist. Any RP member who wants to hear it here, vote {YES} for my long-lost treasure! Thanks!

TM is probably one of the most over-looked, high calibre talents in history. Why? Thankfully he caught my ear in 1990, still late to discover, but I have been following and listening ever since. Nice work Bill!
Please, please play more Taj!
Taj has at least 2 other versions of this tune that are far superior but I love it anyway.
Been a fan of Taj for many years. One of the better concerts I've been to. Fishing song is one of my favorites.
Bought Kulanjan with Toumani Diabate - well worth it. Love his voice.
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET Taj Mahal...he's so good!
This quite likable...I know where Guy Davis gets his influence
I've seen Taj about four times. Every time a great show! Even my kids agree!
Henry Saint Clair Fredericks, better known by the stage name Taj Mahal (born May 17, 1942), is an American blues musician. He was born in Harlem in New York City, but grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. Using a stage name of the Taj Mahal was inspired by a dream.... In 2006, he appeared as a guest musician on the Ladysmith Black Mambazo album Long Walk to Freedom, playing an electric guitar backing for "Mbube" ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight")... On February 8, 2006, Taj Mahal was designated the "official Blues Artist" of Massachusetts by Chapter 19 of the Acts of 2006.<1> On December 16, 2006, he appeared with his band, Taj Mahal Trio, at the 18th Annual Warren Haynes Xmas Jam in Asheville, NC.
