He's got all the whiskey
He's got all the whiskey

He's got all the money
He's got all the money
He's got all the money, but he just won't give me none.

He's got all the women
He's got all the women
He's got all the women, but he doesn't give me one.

He's got all the power

He's got all the power
He's got all the power, he won't give me none.

Now he's got religion
He's even got religion
He's even got religion, but he just can't teach me one.

He's got all the whiskey
He's got all the whiskey
He's got all the whiskey, won't give me none
Won't give me none; not even won't give me none.

Always loved JM since first hearing him with Solid Air. Thanks for the tips.

If you're a fan of this, check out John's "And...Live" double CD.

You'll thank me...not that you'd need to.๐Ÿ˜Š

You probably hear J J Cale.
Wow. One of the best and only now I learned thx to RP.
Hmmm, a bit of Steely Dan to the overall feel?
The god of all wayward guitarists!

. . . . . .  and with no whiskey, money, women or power.
smh

Strangly, I hear Clapton....
JM's version of Glory Box has so much soul and meaning

"He's Got All the Whiskey" (Bobby Charles)
"God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind)" (Randy Newman)
"How Fortunate the Man with None " (Dead Can Dance)
"Small Town Talk" (Bobby Charles, Rick Danko)
"Excuse Me Mister" (Ben Harper)
"Strange Fruit" (Abel Meeropol)
"The Sky Is Crying" (Elmore James)
"Glory Box" (Portishead)
"Feel So Bad" (Lightnin' Hopkins)
"Death Don't Have No Mercy" (Reverend Gary Davis)
Another talented person who died too young
The Thomas Picketty song.
This was, I think, John's only covers album... but still great for all that.   There's an awesome version of "Strange Fruit" on it.  One of the great, and least appreciated, artists.
the stingey bastard! he'll get his eh Johnn-o, you were one solid rocker mister  : )
Always loved JM since first hearing him with Solid Air. Thanks for the tips.

Always grateful to hear big John.
However, noting his 20+ album output he's clearly under represented on the RP playlist.
All those wonderful albums...especially perhaps
*Solid Air
*Grace & Danger
*One World
*Sundays Child
*Inside out
*Piece by Piece
*The Apprentice For any other JM's affeciando's out there, I'd personally nominate his version of "One World" on his "Live" at the Shaw theatre album as being THE most spine tingling JM recording in existence!!

Love this, thanks! Great for a stayin'-inside July day in San Francisco...where it's cold, windy, foggy.

Best song last hour!
Why nothing at all from One World, surely one of his best?

Same here, although at least he's enunciating the lyrics clearly in this number, rather than mumbling them. As with Dylan and Waits, who are also brilliant songwriters, I prefer covers of their songs to the originals, their 'idiosyncratic' voices being a taste I've never been able to acquire. My loss.
great artist, and this to me is another excellent song  from him
John was an unbelievable guitar player and song writer in his early years. Tumbler, Solid Air, Bless the weather and Sundays child are all brilliant. This song is mediocre in comparison.

R.I.P. John, Every time I hear you it brings a lump to my throat. Thanks for playing it Bill.

Miss John a lot - he was the best thing to come out of Scotland
Geez, following on the heels of Kathleen Edwards Goodnight Calif, this sounds so thin and feeble.

Blek.
Very Nice !!!
R.I.P. John, Every time I hear you it brings a lump to my throat. Thanks for playing it Bill.

Thanks, Bill, been wanting to hear more John Martyn since I read Eric Clapton's reverent thanks to him for being a major influence. The more I learn, the more I appreciate.

A genius perhaps - but seems like most of our American cousins are put off my his distinctive slurred singing style...
Very observant - we only listen to perfectly enunciated and highly educated vocalists with spotless stage manners and peerless personal lives.

Its a great thing - personal taste. Doesn't matter whether the majority of the US subscribers like JM or not, the point is the guy was gifted, created genuinely moving songs, was a real influence to others who gained more publicity, but was a performer and a great musician. As a Brit I saw JM play around the circuit a few times. Emotional or what, on stage enigmatic - where he felt safest, and erratic at times - but a genius.

This was not one of his best albums - but RP really ought to accept a few more uploads from ALL those wonderful albums!!

Unfortunately, from the biograph I've read recently, so were his worthless parents, who were critical and/or dismissive of his singing (they both did light opera-type music).
Give the amount of whisky he drank, this is rather apt.
We lost John on January 29, 2009. Travel safely John.

........this man is incredible! I've had the pleasure of hearing this man live in the Cork Opera House last September in Ireland - Supported by UltanJon (https://www.ultanjon.com).......folks!....all I can say is that for a man with one leg (God bless the magical man - He's now on one leg)......he was absolutely infectious!!!..........check out his back catalogue. It's expansive......he's now living in Kilkenny in Ireland and still going strong. This man is on my top 10 list of artists to learn from.......................and he's a huge stoner, so he's got my vote!!! - ENJOY
That "ping-ping" at the start makes me think it's going to be Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus... (Edit) Just realised it's in Rebecca's ident.
Righteous Scot, this one....
Best when you've got all the whiskey.
Laughably bad. 1) "Romantic"-evening-in-front-of-the-fireplace drumbeat and "ka-sha" cymbals 2) Hey genius, words have second halves too--you should try pronouncing them some time
i dunno. this guy kinda sucks when he isn't covering portishead... have tried to like him for like about 30 years. could grow on me now though. who knows?
He's got all the whiskey...? Is that what you call The Pie-Eyed Piper?
I was about to say that the second half of the Underworld tune was way better than the first, and then I noticed that it'd changed. Cooool.

...which is now on the playlist. My first accepted upload, very happy BTW - the stuff about the hammer his body has taken over the years is alas all too accurate. John had part of a leg amputated last year. He's still doing gigs from his wheelchair, though! Have seen him a few times live, great performer. He should be better represented on RP, guess I'll have to rip some more stuff. Damned shame about Small Hours, that's such a stunning piece, geese and all...
nice sound and groove....something refreshing for sure

John was a friend and contemporary of Nick Drake - the track "Solid Air" was dedicated to / about Nick. I tried uploading the glorious "Small Hours", but alas it apprently didn't grab Bill and is now languishing on the "probably not" pile Disappoint-ed...
Anything from John is always welcome with me! His early stuff was a bit like Nick Drake, but he survived to try several different styles, and always sounded good. Heavy drinking HAS taken its toll on his carreeer though...

Indeed, he/she sounds like a pop-rock drummer who seems to be longing for a more contemporary drum job!
