From in the shadow she calls
And in the shadows she finds a way
Finds a way
And in the shadow she crawls
Clutching her faded photograph
My image under her thumb
Yes with a message for my heart
Yes with a message for my heart

She's been everybody else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own
Everybody else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own

Hey, and in the doorway they stay
And laugh as violins fill with water
Screams from the bluebells can't make them go away
Well, I'm not seventeen
But I've cuts on my knees
Falling down as the winter takes one more cherry tree

She's been everybody else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own
Everybody else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own

Voice 1:
Everyone else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own
Everyone else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own
Everyone else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own
Everyone else's girl
Maybe one day
Maybe one day, one day she'll be her own

Voice 2:
Everyone else's girl
One day she'll be her, she'll be her
Rushing rivers thread so thin
Limitation
Oh dreams with the flying pigs
Turbid blue
And the drug stores too
Safe in their coats
And in their do's yeah
Yeah smother in our hearts
A pillow to my dots
Baby, baby, yeah

And in the mist there she rides
And castles are burning in my heart
And as I twist I hold tight
And I ride to work every morning wondering why
"Sit in the chair and be good now"
Oh and become all that they told you
The white coats enter her room
And I'm calling my baby, calling my baby, calling my baby, calling

Everybody else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own
Everybody else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own
Everybody else's girl
Maybe one day she'll be her own

KATE BUSH RIP-OFF!
I loved her when I was in high school and early college. Angsty indie-girlie music. Girl was one of my favorite songs... Now I can't stand most of her stuff. This one isn't so bad.

Completely agree. I just don't get her. Too much self-indulgent warlbling for my taste. I'll take Joni Mitchell or Rickie Lee Jones or Natalie Merchant or Jem or Dido or Beth Orton or Portishead or Stereolab instead.
Hey, not only do I agree with you but I used to live in Marlborough! 10 Roosevelt St, 1st Fl! Go Panthers!
I thought it said she went back to Venus? Not my style.

What a surprise to hear something like this from Torn Anus........whiney vocals and tinkly piano...........blech!
Oh, how clever! She was raped, and perhaps physically damaged in the process, so let's make up a smarmy vituperative to acknowledge that! Teehee! Torn Anus...get it? ....enough, please?

Heck, I heard Seattle was such a cool town. So much for rumors.
I love Tori Amos, but I admit, her live concerts are so much better when she plays wioth a band. I think it's because the band forces her to be more disciplined and focused

Survivor is a far better word to use unless your intent is to put down people who have been through hell and don't want to hide it like a dirty secret.
I'm down with that.
I am 100% with you. I just wanted to clarify that the word victim is a negative kind of whinny word that people use in a way that puts down people who have been through bad experiences, be it rape, incest, or oppression. Survivor is a far better word to use unless your intent is to put down people who have been through hell and don't want to hide it like a dirty secret. Artists like Tori and Fiona who have come out as survivors of sexual abuse or assault are often criticized as playing the "victim" card, and that really bothers me, because they are singing about their experiences which are valid and powerful and not something they should hide. Speaking out empowers others to speak out and not be ashamed.

The word isn't victim it is survivor.
I hope no one minds, but I'm not really either a victim or a survivor, and I still connect with Tori Amos songs on a thrillingly profound level. When I listen to "Girl," I know I can't relate to a woman's suffering, to a woman's growing pains, to a woman's way of dealing with abuse or slight or desire. The point is, I WANT to relate, or rather, I believe it's important to support and (to the degree they need it and appreciate it) protect women from the unfair atrocities they face. Same for ethnic groups, the poor, anyone who feels persecuted. (I happen to be part of an ethnic group...) If the point of victim/survivor songs is solely to connect with other victim/survivors, that's like saying there's no point to evangelizing the plight, because no one who hasn't been through it will understand. That means whites had no place standing up for blacks in the 60's, either the 1860's or the 1960's. But I want the world to be a better place for everyone, even if I may not have a place in everyone's world. So if Tori sings about her anger at being the subject of objectification, and I get that, then I'm going to be angry with her. Like I said, hope that's okay with you.

If you really knew what it feels like playing a piano and having on it everything you think at the moment, you would have an orgasm instead of taking Dido or Beth Orton. I listen to Massive Attack, Portishead and Death as well. But Tori Amos is just much better than Beethoven. Yeah she is. :D
*8 only because this isn't my favorite version!
I've never seen her in concert but this live version of 'girl' has got some drive to it. I like it much more than the studio version. Where's that ticketmaster site now....

Do I respect her as an artist? Absolutely! Can I sit and listen to more than one song in a row? Nope.

TORI IS A MUSICAL GENIUS...POETIC BEAUTY IN EVERY WORD! LOVE HER... :meditate.gif:
Hmmmm, Who is this "Tori Amos" What a fresh sound! A real departure from the other stuff here on RP. Bill, I absolutely insist that you research her entire catalog and put it on heavy rotation immediately! Oh, I see you already have... :grumpy.gif:
Love love love this song! What a great follow up to Coldplay. This woman IS talent, folks.
Uh-oh! From a 9 (Coldplay ) to a 2 (Tori). Use your inhaler, dear.
I can appreciate Tori. To love Tori, I think you need to be some kind of victim. :fight.gif:

Correct!
yet another tori fan here...there are many of us who don't find her singing "whiny," but strong and cathartic and beautiful. This is not one of my favorite Tori songs, but I still want to say that the Torn Anus jokes are getting really old. Mute it if you have such a problem.

man, I can't wait till she goes on tour again. hmm.. her going on tour would mean that she will have released another album. .. I can't wait for that either.
One of the albums that got me through my later teen years... Wonderful, wonderful song and Tori is an amazing artist.
Ick.
yep.... you'll find the precious Ms Tori's picture in the dictionary under "annoying." As I write this the song has changed to Patty Griffin. Sweet relief!
What a surprise to hear something like this from Torn Anus........whiney vocals and tinkly piano...........blech!
Not a fan of Tori's stuff at all.... pretty annoying to me, IMHO.
Did anyone else recognize Tori as the lounge singer in "Mona Lisa Smile"? Wonder why she did that...
"To Venus and Back" is the first Tori album I bought...I bought it cause I knew I liked the song "1000 oceans"...I thought "hmm there's a live album of her older stuff included...that might be nice"...I put the live disk in the cd player... right at the point that the crowd is screaming as the first dark piano chords hit on the very first song (Precious things)....that's when I became a Tori fanatic. yes..Tori..I..hear..and..obey

i can identify with that......and with tori. this is an awesome song.
oh yes.....we have a live one here!
Vanessa Carlton has a long, long way to go to be spoken of in the same breath as Tori IMO. Having seen Tori 4 or 5 times (twice just her and a piano), she's really impressive live. She did a tour with Alanis a few years back that was really great... two great live artists backed with two great bands made for a really nice night.

Did she just drop \"Cornflake\" and release the same song? I can\'t figure this chic out!

Don't love her, don't hate her.... I guess I can do without her!
