I been in a cave
For forty days
Only a spark
To light my way
I wanna give out
I wanna give in
This is our crime
This is our sin

But I still believe
I still believe
Through the pain
And the grief
Through the lies
Through the storms
Through the cries
And through the wars
Oh, I still believe

Flat on my back
Out a sea
Hopin' these waves
Don't cover me
I'm turned and tossed
Upon the waves
When the darkness comes
I feel the grave

But I still believe
I still believe
Through the cold
And the heat
Through the pain
And through the tears
Through the crowds
And through the cheers
Oh, I still believe

I'll march this road
I'll climb this hill
Down on my knees if I have to
I'll take my place
Up on this stage
I'll wait 'til the end of time
For you like everybody else
I'm out on my own
Walkin' the streets
Look at the faces
That I meet
I feel like I like I want to go home
What do I feel
What do I know

But I still believe
I still believe
Through the shame
And through the grief
Through the heartache
Through the years
Through the waiting
Through the years

We need all the hope
That we can get
Oh, I still believe

Love this song! It's 2 days before the 2024 election. Song is also on my "Gettin' Through" playlist.

great high school story...

Saw these guys at my first concert, in a basketball gym with horrible sound at UC Santa Barbara in 1986. They opened for Simple Minds, whom I was more into at the time thanks to the Breakfast Club movie soundtrack, but I really enjoyed both bands' sets and now think The Call was actually the better band.

I had just gotten my driver's license and drove there in my stepfather's car with some high school friends, feeling so grown up. When I got back to the car to drive home, however, it wouldn't start and after a few panicked minutes I had to seek out a pay phone (remember those?) to call him and ask what to do. Turned out I had left it in gear when I parked, and didn't realize that it wouldn't start unless I put it in park first. Kind of deflated that grown-up feeling a bit, but hey, I still laugh about it now almost 40 years later....

Fromage par excellence!
I always, ALWAYS PAUSE AND CRANK at this song. This album carried me through some dim times.  RIP Michael.
Unlike this 1986 high school graduate, this 1986 song holds up.
A song sent out hoping the one, that which the Hermetics calls Atum, hears.  I still believe, too.  Through all my space, and all of my time, I'll keep to this path I've found, using this life I've been gifted, and maybe....just maybe....I still believe....

Merry Christmas folks!

Highlow
Need to play this LOUD.  Just.  Because
Sax removed so we can forget about Conan playing it. LOL
FYI, The late singer Michael Been is the father of Robert Been the bass player/vocals of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who Bill happens to play here on RP quite frequently.
this just made me think of this time last year when my best friend's son (27 yrs old, artist, kind of a recluse) went missing  from his home in oregon one day. left his phone, wallet, keys, etc. at home, door unlocked, and just took a walk. he apparently had a psychotic break at some point and was living in a cave for about 30 days, surviving on some seeds he had brought with him, and some thistle...he said he got into some type of fugue state after meditating for days, (he's very religious/spiritual) and it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever experienced, so he tried it again, and was met with some terrible hallucinations of evil that he felt like eh summoned...he just couldn't get back to the nirvana-type state he experienced. some how, one day he resurfaced, and had no idea he was gone for so long, that the authorities, locals, family (some of whom flew from pittsburgh, pa  including my best friend and the rest of his siblings) had been searching all this time and were thinking that he was dead. and in he walks one day into a library to use a computer to get in touch with family. it was a terrible time, but we were so relieved he resurfaced. the beginning of this song reminds me of coming from his point of view. we really wish he would get some therapy, and get diagnosed so he can get some treatment, but he refuses. we're just hoping this kind of episode doesn't happen again, but...

anyway, that's what i think of when i hear this one.
Strange thinking that I was online in 1986 just like I am now, except it was a DDial chat board instead of Radio Paradise comments.

Awww, I love this. I saw BRMC sometime in 2008 in Lexington (at The Dame, RIP), and I got the chance to talk to Michael Been. I was totally fangirling, ha!

I recently made the move back to cassette - I love the warm hiss and the slow down effect as my walkman batteries die.

Same here...

GREAT TUNE!! Brings back memories. It is so much better now in FLAC w/ great studio phones, amp & DAC.  Thanx RP!

Right?
Tim Cappello  (performed the song in the movie) is still going strong.   Even has a FB page.  Looks damn good for 67...

I nominate this as the official anthem of Gen-X

These words sure have rung true over the last 2 years.

me too TM, but it was my college buddies that i think of with this song.  we wore this album out freshman year.  thankfully i'm still in touch with them so many years later.
Excellent!
Not the same without the 'roid rage sax solo!
Cue immediate mental image of this part of the movie, heh.

Is this a religious song?
I actually thought this was Richard Thompson for a moment...

An automatic 8 for bringing me back to The Lost Boys.

Obviously his son didn't go with his Dad's music genre for BRMC.

BRMC is truly a great band in their own right. Michael died while working on one of his son's BRMC tour. Going out the way he would have wanted, rocking. With family. I still believe.
One of my favorite bands in the late 80's. I got a chance to see them live in Sacramento, but it was spur of the moment, we walked in halfway through the show, and I was already hammered. I don't remember a thing.  But I still have the CDs. RIP Michael Been.
An amazing band on record and in person that never cracked through to the top tier. Tragic. But I Still Believe.
This album, this time I still believe

Wouldn't go back to vinyl myself. If someone could play back a toptop-notch classical music recording on vinyl and show me that it bettered the CD version, I might keep a turntable around for the best LPs. Otherwise, no thanks.

I went Cassette > CD > MP3 > Radio Paradise, and got stuck on that last step.

Kenny Fucking Powers!
Ahhh....Santa Cruz in the mid 80s.  Me in my 20s.  Michael Bean jamming in his garage over off Morissesy Blvd with The Call getting ready for a show at the Catalyst.  I asked to listen in and leaned against my hood drinking a beer.  I knew then that this was a good thing to remember.
Actually thought this was Richard Thompson for a second

Cassettes were great for us wannabe DJ's back in the day, copying from the radio, playing from the turntable (while trying to be extra quiet) and dubbing to tape, and then for advanced users, opening the case and splicing the tape....yeah...those were the days!

I don't remember listening to this when it came out (I was 9) and now I can proudly rate this one an 8.4; almost ready to upgrade to a 9....Long Live RP!!

+1 today; it's a 9 and LLRP!!

Check out Russ Taff's version from 1988, his vocal is amazing.

Reject from the Breakfast Club soundtrack....but its 80's catchy.
Saw these guys perform at a Borders bookstore back in the early 2000s (I know, what a lousy gig). They sounded great, performing for about 50 people. When the set was over, they booked (pun intended).

Boy, this song takes me back. Yeah, 80s. But good over-the-top 80s. Saw these guys in a small Charlotte, NC club around 88-89. Rocked the house.

What a great band was The Call. Very underrated. Miss them.
I have Modern Romans by The Call. One of my fave songs from that was Turn A Blind Eye. Someone should upload it...
Cheese, but good cheese...

Might just be.  I do love the movie and prefer Tim Capello's solo version much better.  The sax solo freaking just plain rocks.

Not sure about that. The Color of Money soundtrack was hard to beat. {#Cheers}

I like the call, but the Syntho makes me cringe slightly, it reminds me of the syntho part of the Revenge of Nerds movie.  I hope that this comment does not ruin the song for others who will only see Gilbert doing his techno thing with a syntho keyboard.
Image result for gilbert nerds movie
"Where's that saxophone-solo I remember!? Did that oliy Conan-lookalike from the movie actually sing it?"

...it was a cover, but yes, tim capello absolutely did sing it, and is remarkably capable of pulling off that sax-bodybuilder-synth-rock act, probably one of the only people who can...
{#Cool}
Only got to see them live once, but they killed. Had to use borrowed equipment as theirs had been stolen prior to the show. RIP Michael.

I'd agree with both the positive and the negative comments about this song.  Michael Beene(sp?) played a great bass live (six-string fretless, IIRC) - among the better talents I saw during that time period for that instrument.
