Said said
Said I remember when we used to sit
In the government yard in Trenchtown
Oba, ob-serving the hypocrites
As they would mingle with the good people we meet
Good friends we have had, oh good friends we've lost along the way
In this bright future you can't forget your past
So dry your tears I say
No woman, no cry
No woman, no cry
Oh my Little sister, don't she'd no tears
No woman, no cry
Said, said, said I remember when we used to sit
In the government yard in Trenchtown
And then Georgie would make the fire light
Log wood burnin' through the night
Then we would cook corn meal porridge
Of which I'll share with you
My feet is my only carriage
So I've got to push on through
But while I'm gone...
Everything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
No woman, no cry
No, no woman, no woman, no cry
Oh, little sister, don't she'd no tears
No woman, no cry
No woman, no woman, no woman, no cry
No woman, no cry
Oh, my little darlyn no she'd no tears
No woman, no cry, yeah
any sister no she'd no tears, no women no cry
No woman no cry, no woman no cry
No woman no cry, no woman no cry
Say, say, said I remember when we used to sit
In a government yard in Trenchtown
Obba, obba, serving the hypocrites
As the would mingle with the good people we meet
Good friends we have, oh, good friends we've lost
Along the way
In this great future,
You can't forget your past
So dry your tears, I say
No woman no cry, no woman no cry
Little darling, don't she'd no tears, no woman no cry
Say, say, said I remember when we used to sit
In the government yard in Trenchtown
And then Georgie would make the fire light
As it was, love would burn on through the night
Then we would cook cornmeal porridge
Of which I'll share with you
My fear is my only courage
So I've got to push on thru
Oh, while I'm gone
Everything 's gonna be alright, everything 's gonna be alright
Everything 's gonna be alright, everything 's gonna be alright
Everything 's gonna be alright, everything 's gonna be alright
Everything 's gonna be alright, everything 's gonna be alright
So woman no cry, no, no woman no cry
Oh, my little sister
Don't she'd no tears
No woman no cry
I remember when we use to sit
In the government yard in Trenchtown
And then Georgie would make the fire lights
As it was, log would burnin' through the nights

Of which I'll share with you
My fear is my only courage
So I've got to push on thru
Oh, while I'm gone
No woman no cry, no, no woman no cry
Oh, my little darlin'
Don't she'd no tears
No woman no cry, No woman no cry
Oh my Little darlin', don't she'd no tears
No woman no cry
Little sister, don't she'd no tears
No woman no cry
I would swear Phish's "Farmhouse" uses this during the bridge.
Plausible. A shoutout to Bob? Yeah, that's the ticket.
I've been very fortunate over the years to see almost all of my favorite bands, many in smaller venues, but probably my biggest musical regret is never getting to see Bob... this will have to suffice.
Me too! I came so close though. In college I sometimes worked as an usher at the university auditorium. Bob had been through once before and I missed him so when I saw he was playing our little college town again, I was really looking forward to seeing him. But... on the scheduled day it turns out I had a big final the next day, and decided I would just catch him next time he came. He passed not too long after that. Always regret not going.
Yup, TOTALLY missed the boat!
The title 'No Woman, No Cry', means 'Woman, don't cry'. The title alludes to telling a woman not to cry.
The lyric has been misunderstood by those outside of Jamaica to mean something like "if there is no woman, there is no reason to cry", or having secret feelings towards women.
In the song, Marley mentions the Government Yards of Trench Town, a public housing project in Kingston where he grew up. The lyrics also include references to cornmeal porridge, a popular breakfast in Jamaica.
Wailers bassist Aston 'Family Man' Barrett told NME in 2012: "The song is about the strength in the mama of course, strength in the ladies. And we love a woman with a backbone. Something like a wishbone!
"They have to be like a she lion! Woman strong, you know, not depending on the man. Of course the man is there to help you, then for every successful man, there is a good woman."
Wow, your constant song rating updates are like watching the stock market.
"I remember when we used to rock in a project yard in Jersey
And little Georgie would make the firelight
As stolen cars passed through the night
And then we'd hit the corner store for roots, paper, and brew
My drink's my only remedy
For pain of losing family, but while I'm gone shorty
Everything's gonna be alright, everything's gonna be alright
Fugees come to the dance tonight, everything's gonna be alright"
if this song doesn't deserve 10 I wonder which one then?!?
I'm with you, well nearly all the way there I have this at a 9, which is about as high as any 'live' tracks I've rated on RP. And considering the quality of the sound put out, with the feedback and crowd noise, that's saying a lot, right? Gosh I wish I had had a chance to see Bob M perform!! Long Live RP!!

This is part of the Bob mix.
He has you well trained :)
So well said!! Bless you and this insightful comment!
If you are ignorant of the genres history and its wealth of practitioners right up to this very day, perhaps?
Mama Far sad.
Had a great chuckle at this. thank you

I don't believe in karma either, but yes, I called god an evil shithead. I would say the same about any other fictitious character, whose name I would likely also capitalize. I'm always amazed how many people make excuses for god and all of the atrocities attributed to him. "Everyone in my village died from the plague but god spared me! Thank god!"
Really?

As I'm reading this and listening to Marley, my dog walks in, and lays down, flat out, like he does when sleeping...very interesting...and it's 11:00 AM !

SMART DOG.....

and everything is going to be alright?
yeah, sure, in who's dreams
Have to laugh at the uncanny reality of that comment. Btw, this tune is so dull to me. I'd be willing to bet that being in a live setting hearing this tune...it would be far more interesting.
Are you calling God an evil shithead?
Dude - that's bad karma

I want to believe you, mon. Won't bet the ranch on it, but want to believe you.
and for keeping an accurate count.........
Why did god kill him then? What an evil shithead to inflict such a horrible disease on him with full knowledge of how he would suffer.
Overplayed? Yes. Timeless? Yes.
It's like telling the sun it's overplayed.
10...all day, every day.
Overplayed? Yes. Timeless? Yes.
Always a 10!!!!
Bore me to death LOL
Always a 10!!!!
It's immortal.
actually, for many of us, just crying it out is our way of letting it go (you know vs. putting our fist through a wall) and once we do that and get a little hug and pat on the back, it usually passes and everything is alright.....
and a guy who helps us do that and gets it (like Bob) is a keeper and gets all that love back ;)
There are benefits to trying to understand women. Pitfalls too, like the headache every time the wife changes the rules on me.
It's all worth it though. We are best friends as well as husband and wife.

I'm sorry, but this has me laughing so hard I almost can't type... Thank you so much! I love Bob Marley, but now I'll never be able to listen to his music without thinking of this line and laughing... Oh gawd, I LOVE RadioParadise and all the coconuts who spend time here...
It was his foot that killed him....
"My feet is my only carrot"?

I have known about Bob Marley most of my life, but only came to find this album after I came here to RP. Truly one of the best live albums (or albums period) ever.
"that is the perfect intro for this song-"
Yeah, it's a great version, but why did they pick a live cut for a record (originally heard on vinyl!) that contained microphone feedback?
Because it's part of the song now.
Bob Marley- No Woman, No Cry
Van Morrison- These Dreams Of You
The Derek Trucks Band- This Sky
Ben Harper- Number With No Name
Bill, you're making it hard to focus on work!!! I just want to go play in the sunshine!

Ah, that explains it. I figured Mr. Marley had just one of the more bizarre idiolects out there. Overplayed an all, at this exact moment I like it very much.
Saw him in Hamburg 1980, great great concert.
I ran into the same thing a lot when I lived in Switzerland. I tried to explain to them that in the Jamaican dialect the "No" means "Don't. But I think they liked their version better.
I've always liked the unintentional double meaning. Gives it a whole 'nother dimension.

Yeah, no woman, no cryin'. I get that!
I'll be back.
Sorry . . . just can't handle it at all.
Some lines are drawn for me. This genre is one of them.
JMO.
Surprising (and sad) that even Bob Marley can't do it for you. There are definitely genres I'm not into (ie ska) but I can always find at least one song as an exception, and sometimes that particular song will open up the genre for me.
That's what I love about RP: it challenges my musical tastes.
"My feet is my only carrot"?
"My feet is my only carriage"
"My feet is my only carrot"?
I hear ya' bro!
