Manic depression is touching my soul
I know what I want
But I just don't know how to go about getting it

Feeling, sweet feeling
Drops from my fingers, fingers
Manic depression is captured my soul, yeah

Woman so willing the sweet cause in vain
You make love, you break love
It's-a all the same when it's, when it's over

Music, sweet music
I wish I could caress, caress, caress
Manic depression is a frustrating mess
Wow

Well, I think I'll go turn myself off an' uh, go on down
All the way down
Really ain't no use in me hanging around, oh, I gotta see you

Music, sweet music
I wish I could caress and uh, kiss, kiss
Manic depression is a frustrating mess
Wow
Yeah
Ow

Music, sweet music
Music
Depression

ALL Jimi and Stevie ratings will be a minimum of 20 from now on. The RP Priests have spoken.
To the Haters...

...get a life. You only live ONE.
now shift up third: GO!
When I hear covers of this song I feel so bad for th Drummers.  They have more to live up to on this song than any other Hendrix tune IMHO.

Bite your tongue!!  Jimi was the master of masters, but that takes nothing away from SRV, IMHO.

I saw that tour too, at the Royal Albert Hall in February 1969. I lived in Oxford at the time, which is about 55 miles west of London. After the gig, I drove (with four passengers in a tiny ancient car full of smoke) for nearly an hour before I realised that we were in Essex, which is in the opposite direction.
SUPERGREAT!!!
GODLIKE!!!!

If you'll recall, it wasn't completely legal.
it's tough on Stevie Ray Vaughan when he is followed by Jimi Hendrix. makes Stevie sound like an uninspired guitar player.
Jimi didn't die, he just went home to that planet from beyond that lent him to us. It's the only explanation why he was such a phenomenon and light years ahead of his ilk.
All these years later, finally, I hear the blues in Hendrix's playing -- no better example of this song. What a genius.
for anybody that knows even a bit about psychiatry, the lyrics are bollocks

the tune ain't that good either

I'm glad it got released though, to prove even a "deity" like Jimi can make mistakes, too   {#Mrgreen}
Great track from my favorite Hendrix album.  Wish I still had the Vinyl...
The idea that one man, one very magical man, was able to do so much, with one guitar and friends so firm in the grip and grasp of such an unbound mind and unhindered spirit...just kinda blows my freaking mind, like only Jimmy can.  Way on up, this one goes, every time! ~ JAM!

Everybody in my church loves this song...

This is why they make dials that go to 11.

Not an individual song I might put on very often,

but it always seems to hit the spot when someone else does.
the only person to make depression sound GOOD.
Was in Seattle last week for work and took some time to take in the Experience Music Project (EMP) museum. Fantastic exhibit on Hendrix in London (as well as Nirvana and the Stones '72 American tour). Great museum!
Oh, yeah...Much-needed after a sleepy melancholic stretch...JIMI!
This song manic depression is sooo extraordinary and cool.
One of my favourit Hendrix tracks so far.
Thanks for playing this, Bill.  This is one Hendrix piece that isn't played much... and another showcase for Redding and Mitchell, too.
this is probably my favorite of hendrix's stuff. close would be dolly dagger. both cause
We sure had it good, does it seem legal?

Maaaaaannnn, you should play somethin from The Monkeys.

when posting replies to gigantic photos, it is possible to shrink them.  Some of us like to read actual comments.

I realize I've gone completely off the reservation but to me Band of Gypsys was the sh**t!  there was some brilliant albeit brief work done there. a heavier sound with cox and miles, and some absolute ripass giiittarr.... case in point...lonesome train
Music sweet music
Not the best of John Allen" - by far!

Still - it's  our Jimi "Untouchable" Hendrix!

PS
Still - we should not forget
great Mitch "Fame" Mitchell,
and Noel "Fat Matress" Redding!
Only as a Trio they accomplished this sounds.

PPS
Both - Mitch and Noel got 20.000 Dollar
when released from their rights in the band.
2o-touuuuusand laughable bucks - while, later,
father Hendrix made multi-millions from the
heritage of his son!

B&R - Frequent mention of Soft Machine here.  Can't we get some please?
One of my favorite Hendrix tunes and definitely my favorite rockin tune. Most of his best works are his slower ballads IMO. This song roks!!{#Drummer}
1969 again. Saw Jimi that year at the Bank Street Theatre here in Ottawa. Opening act Soft Machine. Great show. Old movie theatre and pieces of the ceiling were being peeled off by the volume
Still one of my favorite Hendrix albums was the last one he did in a studio, "Cry of Love", which then became entagled in a huge legal battle between his surviving relatives. It was finally re-released about 10 years or so on a CD, but because of the legal outcome, was not released under the original title, but under "The First Rays of the New Rising Sun". Drifiting has got to be one of my all time favorite Hendrix tunes, as it is a slow song with great lyrics, "Drifting through a sea of forgotten teardrops....."

Unfortunately, Jimi was completely upstaged by Soft Machine that night in '68.

Great song to start off a Monday.

KSFA!!

{#Motor}
I would have loved to see this performed live.
It would be a "Manic Depression" not to listen to this unique and talented musician!
Wow! That's Hendrix for ya...he and his guitar were one and the same. {#Bananajam}{#Bananajam}{#Drummer}{#Tongue}
Hadn't rated this one yet, but it goes straight to 10

Mitch was great - what a loss. For a great ear exercise, go back and concentrate on the drums on these early albums. Some really great stuff!

Always amazing.
Wonderful song, especially for a forty-year old !!
3/4 time Hendrix. Does it get any better than this? I think not. Hats off to Mitch and Noel as well. Awesome band.

If you're talking about manic phases being "sweet", you're not suffering mania.  Sounds like hypomania to me.

I give high ratings to new music I intend to buy. I own plenty of Miles. The rating feature here is pretty useless if you use it the way it was intended. Oh, other than to say, 'My favorites are better than your favorites.'

It's bad form on RP to use a person's ratings against them. One person's sucko-barfo is another's godlike, and that I'm sure applies to your rating record as well (no, I've not looked at it). Taste is subjective. Bleedin' obvious thing to say, but sometimes the bleedin' obvious has to be said, looks like.

Sadly all 3 of the Experience are now in that big R&R band in the Sky: JImi, Noel Redding and now Mitch Mitchell.  Hendrix was a genius but I think his best work was with Redding and Mitchell and you know they had to be good to play with him.

Not really.  Twangy guitar pop certainly didn't originate with this song (look further back a decade or so), and I have a real hard time describing the sound of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as "twangy guitar pop."  Maybe there's some similar instrumentation?  Hendrix's Fender Strat and Cobain's Fender Jaguar perhaps.

When it was recorded, 4 tracks were the norm.  They separated the tracks across the stereo spectrum.  Sounded great!
They don't do that as much now - it's like glorified mono.

Agreed; It's natural to concentrate on Jimi's guitar and voice, but sometime just listen to the drums. Amazing. It's been said that the rhythm section of the Experience was the bass with both guitar and drums as lead instruments!

It's hard to not concentrate on the guitar, but you're right, listen to the first couple albums and listen to Mitch. He was such a perfect match for Jimi. Most of the time Noel Reading was left to cover the rhythm and beat all by himself, which he did.
I fully appreciate JH's legacy in musical history, and no way could I ever say that the world of music would be the same without his presence. But really, in my ears, it's just a lot of screeching guitar.
Jimi does it over and over - he launches into some insane wild solo and you wonder how the hell he's going to come back to the melody and cadence of the song and he does it and you don't even notice. Genius.
