Hearing Janis always reminds me of a boss I had in Japan(thirty years ago!) who listened to Janis Joplin in her office. Shortly after she took over the job I was in there for whatever and remarked "If you follow that with some Allman Brothers you're gonna' make me think you're cool, Ma'am". She grinned and replied "I think we're going to get along well, Mr. Brown."

One need only compare the Janice version of "Piece of my Heart" to the recent cover by Faith Hill. If that comparison doesn't explain why Janice Joplin is a great singer, nothing will. A human soul crying for love vs white bread and mayo.  But Faith Hill sure does look good

Every time I hear Janis Joplin I have chills up and down my spine. My God, what an incredible and awesome performer! I saw her only once -- it was mind bending. With her death, self-inflicted via the usual devices of alcohol, drugs and burning the candle at both ends, the world -- yes The World -- lost a great voice and wonderful personality.
