WONDERFUL!

In my experience...whenever I have had enormous tits slapping my back at a Kinks concert, the chicks have usually been really fat and ugly, hence distracting from one of the greatest bands in history and totally blowing the ambience of the entire evening :^ /
Imma go ahead and say this and then you can get back to your song. Van Halen did this song better.

An ode to naughtiness while alone?

with our arguments, this tag-team of hoodlums

The distractions are clockwork—
the second hand sweeps the soft terrain
while only five fingers remain free to type,
each hand separate yet in constant exploration,
one by touch
the other by temperament.
(My sangfroid here is feigned.
Touch me now I tremble.)

Might my tumescence ever become an ethereal expansion,
elevate to a plane beyond mere biological mechanisms,
mere animal husbandry?
Not in the presence of this effervescent duo,
I doubt.
They always drag me back.
I am 2/3 horse, one part man.
Two against one.
My essence distilled fills my hands.

Nope, that lies a little further south.
This live version of The Kinks almost sounds like an answer to Van Halen's version. I like the garage sound of the original best. The Kinks / Ray Davies were always masters of (typically English?) understatement and irony and not so much this overblown arena rock, IMO.
Saw Kinks in early 80 at LA Amphitheatre. They kept teasing the crowd with the opening rifts of this all night and then knocked it out of the park. I was sitting in last room for warm up band ToTo. A couple came up the ailse after the warm up and asked if I wanted thier tickets. They sais if was closer than mine. They were right 10th row dead centre.

Yea except I would prefer some classic David Lee Roth lead Van Halen over the Kinks anyday!

I saw the Kinks in an outdoor amphiteatre in the 80s and I remember it being incredibly loud. We took a bio break then didn't go back to our seats and sat on the lawn and enjoyed it more. Yeah, I know, wimpy. Fortunately the mounted police had earmuffs on the horses.

Kinks version-THE BEST-live-even better
How do you rate a song that you love when the call and response makes you want to drive a steel bolt through your head. That is a real poser.
Brilliant match up to John Hiatt! It felt like another band jumped on stage and uped the intensity!

I had to come and check it out because I thought it was Adam Sandler singing. Phew, it was just the live version, but Adam Sandler sounds amazingly like this when singing.

LMAO and stop your sobbing! True genius considering tune was written in 1964. I believe story goes that record execs didnt like the tune originally as guitars sounded like a "barking dog." The Davies bros explained that's exactly the sound they wanted! Yeah, I'm really looking fwd to that VH reunion tour
Meh, this cut is so tired . . . used to love this but now its just boring.

I'd add The Clash's London Calling to that eclectic list of jaw droppers.

A jetplane taking off is like 120-140dB. The human pain threshold is 110dB. So...i guess the Kinks had to pay a nice hospital bill for all their fans, cause nobody has ears that can withstand such noise, unless you wear some protection.
The Who made the Guinness Book of World Records for loudest concert for a show in London on May 31, 1976. The record was beaten several times before Guinness stopped listing it because too many people were losing their hearing.

THAT explains the ringing in my ears all these years later. Huh? I last saw them on their Road tour ('88ish?), and they still had it. Anyone seen them (or some part) more recently? Excellent tune, though not the deepest cut I could imagine.

THis song rocks my socks. I'd agree that it's at least as good if not better than the studio version.
You know, I almost always come out in favor of studio recordings as opposed to live recordings, but this really kicks a*. Makes you wish you'd a been there.

I've always been a big fan of the Kinks and Ray Davies, but this song does nothing to showcase Ray's often brilliant songwriting. Maybe a decent cut to finish up a live show with a bang, but it's just a so-so song, and has run its course on FM over the years. Don't draw any conclusions about these guys from this song if you're not familiar with much of their other material... it's certainly not their best work, and with such a deep catalog to draw from, it's a shame a lot of their other, better stuff never got much airplay.

It's just possible JP is right. He broke more ground than anyone other than Hendrix and did the best guitar works on tracks from Beck to Donavan. If the rock purists here have to live with the incursions of trance, ambient, techno, new acoustic, jazz fusion, world music, etc. (all of which I tend to favour) I guess I can live with this.
dmax was right!!! This song was meant to "understated," as only 801 could do it. Really GOT That?? Always a CLASSIC!!!
