And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me
So darling, darling
Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand, stand by me
Stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me
And darling, darling
Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand now, stand by me
Stand by me
Darling, darling
Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand now, stand by me
Stand by me
Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Won't you stand now, oh, stand
Stand by me
When all of your friends is gone

Yeah, after a while, 11 wouldn't be good enough and we'd want a 12. A form of hedonic adaptation for song ratings....

Because then 10 wouldn't matter.
Should be the national anthem.
This was one of the first songs – maybe the first song – that the Playing For Change organization put out.
Playing for Change's version of One Love is fantastic too....
Peace.
DEAD FROM OVERPLAY and those goddamned yucky strings
Give us some great underplayed R&B; Little Willie John, Early Ike Turner, Lee Dorsey or Earl King?
Evidently, you really dig abusive male vocalists. Regarding "Stand By Me", you are outnumbered about a gazillion to one.

Always liked this song but I think John Lennon's version is better, with more feeling.
My rating 9 -OUTSTANDING
Yes, great tune, but he had several Top 40 solo hits, as recent as 1975, as well as earlier hits singing lead with The Drifters.
For me, given this masterpiece, the times and the memories, this is worth at least 15... :)
agreed! and with the current exchange rate, that's what...about an 11.5 in US_RP_Rating? ;-)

Yep!

i say it was from Pink Zepplin fans
this is one of my (probably too many) 10 rated tracks....along with some LZ and PF.... I'm all down with the good old stuff...esp. love me some Drifters while Ben E. King was the vocalist.
i say it was from Pink Zepplin fans
Wonder who else has covered it.
wiki says over 400
i say it was from Pink Zepplin fans
But it's fading into stand by me.
That phrase was actually used long before Stan Lee and Marvel Comics popularized it, but it's where I first saw it as well.
It is actually a gourd guiro played by percussionist Phil Kraus:

Chuckle, chuckle. Sounds like it's a guira. https://www.lpmusic.com/products/guiros/professional-guira/
It's a tough call for me but this one edges Lennon's. Wonder who else has covered it.

And a masterful arrangement. If I told you a soul song started with a stand-up bass solo with triangle and shaker, would you say "that's a hit!"? Wow.
This was the genius of Ahmet Ertegun, his brother Nesuhi, and Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records. They did things that no one else had even thought of, much less crafting them into monster pop hits. I highly recommend the Atlantic "R&B 1947-1974" box set.
AWESOME! And I usually reserve that word for the Grand Canyon or when my wife disrobes in our bedroom.
when I have heard it 17 times since Thursday, it's a 9
I can't rate it much lower.
If you don't want to hear Stand by Me "17 times since Thursday" then turn off your oldies radio station, wtf?
normally I let your stream of music come over me, eager to hear new stuff, sometimes in awe sometimes it leaves me wondered; sometimes I run to my computer to see what you've discovered this time. Now, this one I know ;-) but it also hit's bulls eye for the both of us. thank you Bill and Rebecca for this wonderful radiostation. (from the Netherlands)

John Lennon covered this....nuff said.
Sort of funny, I pretty much only give 10s to songs that I NEVER get tired of hearing. Great songs that seem 'overplayed' only get a 9. But I get where you're comin' from.
I am totally with you. Instinctively is a good word to describe this phenomenom too.

Sigh...
Agreed!
Don't mind me, just free association happening on a rainy Thanksgiving weekend night.
Ditto...it is a good tune for tune's sake...but ugh!

" "Stand by Me" is the title of a song originally performed by Ben E. King and written by Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, original release in 1961, covered by many artists."
" When i was 5 years old, my mother told me happiness was the key to life. when i went to school they asked me what i wanted to be when i grew up. i wrote down "happy ". they told me i didn' t understand the assignment. i told them they didn' t understand life " - *John Lennon*
Exactly.
You nailed it, friend.
If anyone has "Spanish Harlem" by Ben, could you please upload it?
Man, this is summer time music!
I would but I'm eating crunchie peanut butter. Great song.
Have you heard about the Playing for Change organization? They have a cool version of this song, played by dozens of different musicians all over the world:
Playing for Change
Of course, they now have a different song video up...keep an eye on this site! It is a good thing...
Sincerely, Neil
Although I didn't know it as a kid (grew up in the 70s/early 80s), I have always liked it from the first time I did hear it. Love John Lennon's cover, as well.
But I love the edge of pain that Lennon put on his remake.
I don't remember, but it always reminds me of the movie "Stand by Me"
Why is there no 11?
Yeah, after a while, 11 wouldn't be good enough and we'd want a 12. A form of hedonic adaptation for song ratings....
Perhaps more to the point, why is there no rating between 'Quite Likeable' (7) and 'Most Excellent' (8). I guess that the descriptions are open to subjective interpretation but personally, I would rate quite a lot of tracks between 7 and 8.
