Summertime, and the living is easy.
Fish are jumping, and the cotton is high.
Oh, your daddy's rich, and your ma is good-looking.
So, hush, little baby, don't you cry.

One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing.
Yes, you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky.
But 'til that morning, there's nothing can harm you.
Yes, with daddy and mammy standing by.

Summertime, and the living is easy.
Fish are jumping, and the cotton is high.
Oh, your daddy's rich, and your ma is good-looking.
So, hush, little baby. Baby, don't you cry.
Oh, don't you cry.
Don't you cry.
Oh, don't you cry.
Don't you cry.

Competent, but it just kind of sits there for five minutes. Lacks dynamics in all aspects. Doesn't add anything beyond what dozens of other renditions have provided.
Lacks charm.
Try harder Eilen.
This is very nice
jerry miller!!
I don't like this song but I make an exception for this version. Never liked the lyrics but Eilen Jewell just has a way.
Please,... give this 'jewel' a spin more often, especially now that it's "summertime!"
For some reason this reminds me of Tuck & Patty.
another unnecessary cover. Stop!!!
Pretty sure Mr. Gershwin would approve.

Decent rendition but doesn't come close to Janis.

A lot sexier -- esp. the guitar -- than Janis's overly emphatic lament, God love her.
really great rendition of this classic song.  Had she been singing in Boise when I lived there I might not have left!  Of course she was a small child when I lived there.  What a voice!
Decent rendition but doesn't come close to Janis.
Fantastic version of the classic. I love her voice and the understated, tasty jazz guitar.  Was listening driving to the office and thought "who is this, never heard of her, I need to look her up on RP."  Turns out she's from my hometown, Boise, ID.  Hadn't heard of her, thanks RP for teaching me about my local musicians. I'll be on the lookout for her shows!

Disagree.  Her wistful distraction puts me in mind of what Bess is supposed to be thinking when she sings this.

Yet another reason that listen to RP. This is one of the best versions of 'Summer time I've ever heard!

Agreed! When I first started to listen to to it, I thought oh Yea!,  another poor imitation, but when I actually started to listen to it, I thought, no this is not an imitation, it's an interpretation and it was great.

I'll accept your apology but Sam Cooke for me.
Gershwin wrote this at my hometown, on the beach at Folly at Charleston SC. Nice iteration.
I'm sorry but Janis owns this one.
Was this really necessary?
Fantasic version

I'll admit that I've never understood what this song is about (other than not winter), but in this version the lyrics just sound like gibberish.

Are you saying they are more gibberish here than other versions? Either way, I love the song and this version. It is about 5 minute long.

It's supposed to evoke the feeling of the old South in summer. Or so I gather. More of a feel than logical narrative. But I've never spent any time it South, so what do I know. Just that it's a classic in all its iterations.
Yet another reason that listen to RP. This is one of the best versions of 'Summer time I've ever heard!

Nice.
Personal opinion only. This is one of the all time great songs and there have been many wonderful versions - but this isn't one of them for me. 'IT' just isn't there. I won't rate it down, just move on
Iconic song and I like this rendition.
Guitar and Ellen's voice combine quite nicely.
A tad over-wrought for my money, but she can sing and the guitar player can play.
