Nobody's fault but mine
Nobody's fault but mine
Trying to save my soul tonight
It's nobody's fault but mine

Devil he told me to roll
Devil he told me to roll
How to roll the log tonight
Nobody's fault but mine

Brother he showed me the gong
Brother he showed me the ding dong ding dong
How to kick that gong to life
Oh, it's nobody's fault but mine

Got a monkey on my back
Got a monkey on my back
Gonna change my ways tonight
Nobody's fault but mine

I will get down rollin' tonight
Nobody's fault but mine

Did she do any work with Sister Rosetta Stone? She was something else.
What he said!
Very good. Joan Osborne is a fine artist. I have this song with the Blind Boys from Alabama and I hate the words, depressing Christian stuff but the rythm is great.

Funny - I read the ridicule and think is nobody sarcastic anymore?

Did anybody notice that the advertised lyrics are not matching with the song ?
If you take away the singing you can hear JJ Cale Mama Don’t Like!!!

I like Joan, but she's a little too "white" for this great tune!

What?! White folks got rhythm!
Sheesh! Next you'll be sayin Elvis was too white for his early songs... Where will it stop?? Can't we all just get, err... Sing along?

(from The Commitments) Jimmy Rabbitte: Do you not get it, lads? The Irish are the blacks of Europe. And Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland. And the Northside Dubliners are the blacks of Dublin. So say it once, say it loud: I'm black and I'm proud.

LMAO! No. Really. This kind of ignorance should be ridiculed mercilessly.
Prophetic lyrics
Love this great rendition by Joan Osborne.  However the lyrics on the RP player page for this song are incorrect.
The Bassist sure is having a great time on this one!

"Nobody's Fault but Mine" is a song first recorded by gospel blues artist Blind Willie Johnson in 1927

I much prefer the Beth Rowley version.
Hmmm MMmm Sister got soul!  Godlike piece imo
Worst Zeppelin cover ever.

Joan Osborne performed at The Grand tonight with Paul Thorn and The Holmes Brothers. A great night of music.

Thanks for the great photo Calypsus_1!!!

Super cut too : )
Here's a great cover of that LZ tune.

I love Joan but wish she hadn't used a synthesizer and faster tempo for this. Great voices throughout but the music feels stuck in the mid-80s.

I'm a die-hard synth guy, and I don't hear any synth in this song. Are you confusing the Wurlitzer piano sound with synth?
Well nobody needs this phony elevator version. And yes, it's her fault.
Very enjoyable....
Utterly miserable
Having heard this in 8 part harmony, I do think this rendition get s the job done.
No, no, no.....
Always good to hear different versions, but Blind Boys of AL or Led Zep knock this into a cocked hat
And I normally like Joan.
This just doesn't do it I'm afraid

I cannot help but wonder if you really mean that Joan Osborne actually repels you. There are loads of musicians whose work does not appeal to me, but repel? That's in another dimension. I however, think she's pretty fantastic.

4 -> 3
This is a terrific cut and the second version of the song in 24 hrs.  You tryin' to tell us somethin', Bill?  BTW, if you other listeners ever go to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and don't do the Gospel Tent, you are stone fools.
I need a PSD button for my Roku. {#Sad}
Nice tune. But clearly no relation to Led Zeppelin's Nobody's Fault But Mine.
I think Joan Osborne can certainly be Gospel-ly, Bluesy, or anything else she wants,..  and especially on a tribute album,.. she is very versatile.

Go to the back of the class and recite 100 times,

''I must listen and appreciate the roots of Rock'n Roll''.

Sorry Joan, your not even close
I hate this! Can someone please help me understand why this evokes revulsion....thanks in advance.

Keep it coming. I like the mix and enjoy the gospel based blues... Nice... Plus I had forgotten about her... Again, Thank You

Joan Osborne - "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted" Live

"Joan Osborne performs this classic motown hit originally by Jimmy Ruffin. From the movie "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown"...a story about the motown house band known as The "Funk Brothers"."

If anyone else was singing this, it would at least be a 6.............since it's .......her......a generous 3.

She gets a raw deal, the musical version of being typecast because of her one hit. This is good.

funny, i just saw this comment of yours. i agree. i think she's got lots of soul, and i think it suits her voice very well. she's got that rawness, that...i don't know what to call it. but i think this really, really suits her. i like it a lot.

It's not the worst I've heard.  Maybe if she did a shot of whiskey right before she hit the stage.  Maybe give it that little bit of sumthin-sumthin that's missing. {#Neutral}
I like the Led Zeppelin version
I like Joan, but she's a little too "white" for this great tune!
just bought a 4 CD Sister Rosetta Tharpe compilation on Amazon for only $20. Thanks RP!

Love it! Cool beat........
I've got the version by Blind Willie Johnson. Joan Osborne makes it possible to understand all the lyrics, but you can't compare the two. BWJ takes it.

Well, I don't know any of the other versions so I can't compare. I love Joan's voice, though, it's got that sexy bluesy quality that just makes me want to dance all sexy and slow.
Looks like we're playing the "Blame Game" -- from "Bang and Blame" and "Blame On Me" to this....

Sounds like a Murph and the Magic Tones version.
Well, for goodness' sake, I knew I heard this one earlier today...Blind Boys of Alabama. Joan does a pretty good job. I had heard of Sister Rosetta Tharpe but didn't know she had recorded this one. Sing it, baby!
She's got a great voice! Love it!
holy crap this rocks!
She should be backing up the Holmes Bros. They would do justice to this song, instead of karaoke it up like Joan. I mean really, she had 1 or 2 decent songs, now people are just trying to find things for her to do. Is 'simply go away' an option?

There are other versions of this (besides the orginal) which are more worthy of airtime.
Sorry Joan. But this just doesn't work. With such a good voice, you've almost ruined a classic song that I believed was impossible to ruin...until now, that is.
msme wrote:

ditto !!!
I would give her a 3/4 artha franklin and thats a really really good score.

I don't really care for this version...especially after hearing the Blind Boys do it better just this morning. But I sure wish my teacher had a dancing parrot that I could just refer to in casual conversation. :)

I second that ... Relish rocks

I've heard St. Theresa a few times on here... and yes i think it rocks 2.
you can sing this song only if the fear of going to hell keeps you awake at night ...

This is probably the way somebody like Aretha or Mavis would do the song. Though soulful and very nice, she pales in comparison. On the other hand, which singer doesn't :-k
I normally only like to post positive things, but when Joan started singing Blues standards/ covers I stopped listening- I still really enjoy the first album. (I guess I did end on a positive note here).
A little too much on the slick side....I think I like the Blind Boys' version better. Not Joan's fault, but her producer's.....this song needs a raw edge.
the bass line/playing get on my nerves in this song. Bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-ub-ub-ub-bu-bu-bu-ub-ub-ub-ub-bu-bubu-ub-bu-bu-bu-ubu-bu......incessant.
By singing this, does it mean Joan sold her sold to the devil ?

I recommend you to see living in the shadows aof motown, she sings in that movie and her performances are more than excellent..she is an incredible gifted artist
Usually when I have to blame someone I blame The White Man... Oh, wait, Bill Cosby says I can't do that anymore... never mind.
This is nobody's fault at all!!! Praised be Bill!
this is nobody's fault but Bill's....
Joan has such a beautiful voice that she can really adapt to various styles - something like this really shows off her soulful side, but take a listen to "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" (which I first heard on RP) and it's a completely different side. Talented and versatile.
so much better than that "god were one of us" thing. although, at the time, i liked that as well.
Living in Japan I miss out on a lot of the over-played-fodder-for-hits-playlists. Glad I missed out on Joan Osborne because I really like her vocal stylings.

Three words: o. ver. played.
I'm getting a little bit sick of this song.....
This is really quite good. It's got me doin the chair dance. Yeah. Crank it. Nice guitar and piano licks too.
Here's a link to this album on the Tower Records site. I've already ordered my copy.
How about Joan singing Joan? She has good material of her own. It's becoming tiresome hearing nothing but all her many, many, tiresome covers!
