The last time I saw Jesus
I was drinking bloody mary's in the South
In a barroom in New Orleans
Rinsin' out the bad taste in my mouth
She wore a dark and faded blazer
With a little of the lining hanging out
When the jukebox played Miss Dorothy Moore
I knew that it was him without a doubt
I said the road is my redeemer
I never know just what on earth I'll find
In the faces of a stranger
In the dark and weary corners of a mind
She said, The last highway is only
As far away as you are from yourself
And no matter just how bad it gets
It does no good to blame somebody else
Ain't it crazy
What's revealed when you’re not looking all that close
Ain't it crazy
How we put to death the ones we need the most
I know I'm not a martyr
I've never died for anyone but me
The last frontier is only
The stranger in the mirror that I see
But when I least expect it
Here and there I see my savior's face
He's still my favorite loser
Falling for the entire human race
Ain't it crazy
What's revealed when you’re not looking all that close
Ain't it crazy
How we put to death the ones we need the most

I'm an atheist and I think those lyrics are stupid but I gave this song a 6 because of the singer's voice and the melody.

The first two lines here hooked me instantly. Never heard this before. Thankyou RP for introducing another new band (and adding to my wish list)

Sounds kinda like that drunken whore affect of Lucinda Williams - which I can't stand.
I really like the sound of this melody though.

I can't get past the fact that they named their band after the most crack and crime infested areas in Cincinnati.

I hope you're just misreading the regional accent. If not, might want to avoid casual conversation when visiting the deep South.

I love this... Also love the way the pedal steel flows through the song....

Walking to New Orleans -> Jesus In New Orleans
I'm guessing that next up is Arlo Guthrie's City of New Orleans, but I'm *hoping* that instead it's Louis Armstrong's Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?

Sounds like low rent Lucinda Williams. Her, I like. This, not so much.
I changed my rating from 6-9. Please play some more OtR.

it is a very interesting song, i point out the excellent register of voice of Karin Bergquist, writter, vocalist and guitarist; unhappyly i do not make use of elements enough to make one correct appreciation with only a song: in case that it is possible and it is center of your "program-of-the-party", to pass more songs of these artists please.

This sounds like a mix of Lucinda Williams, Pure Prairie League, and Floyd Cramer, which is not a bad thing. Come to think of it, why don't we ever hear Pure Prairie League on this station? Is our DJ not cool?
This one gets an 8 for the opening line alone.
Which was? Last time I saw Jesus I was drinking blood and WHAT?

Agree with Jelani and tompall.

I hear some Tracy Nelson.
I remember you guys playing this back in '05 after we all started to find out just how bad things were in New Orleans.
This sounds like Lucinda Williams only to the extent that both singers are women and have a southern (Ohio, in this case) inflection. Beyond that, I cannot see the source of possible confusion. Of the albums by Over the Rhine that I have, this is the most consistently fine. It's great travelling music, especially with a bit of a hempified buzz.
Have to confess, this is a little too much country for me.

While the "intonation" comment is a bit strong, I have to agree in principle. I saw these guys live (hey, I went there for the other band, Hem), and I thought they were awful. Her vocal styling bothered me the most.
Wow, what a fantastic sound. Thanks R.P.
I'm thinking Rod Stewart circa Every Picture. n 8 on forst listen, quite possibly a 10.
BEAUTIFUL

No, I didn't know this was an original OtR tune...but I did know that Gram, sadly, passed 30 years ago. Thanks for the info...that'll teach me to look things up myself before putting hand to keyboard. You gotta admit though this does have the same writing style as a GP tune.
Was JUST listening to this in the car ride home...Good stuff!
I'd like to get drunk in a smoky Cincinnati bar with these guys.

LW is whinier. EG is smokier. This is definitely on the EG side of the tracks.
Been a huge fan of OtR for 12 years. This is one of my favorites, though admittedly not one of their most distinctive.
You gotta check out "Films for Radio" (great album) and "Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander" (super-hot lyrics, great guitar lick) for some more OtR-distictive goodies.
Did Gram Parsons ever cover this? Seems to me he may have, not sure.

If ever Australia enter the Eurovision Song Contest - and if Israel is part of Europe, then presumably it cant be long before Australia hosts 'Jeux Sans Frontieres'- then the Melbourne vote would be nil points.
But Fred knew that already.

Fairly dull. With the volume low, it just sounds like a mishmash of "whooooa yeeeeahhh ohhhhh".

Anyway, it still seems like a good tune so far.

sigh...I love OTR. Not only are they amazing musicians, but they are awesome people. This song makes me happy because it's gritty and it flips the paradigm of the way most people look at Jesus, yet is consistent with the what He taught.
I love her voice!
More from these guys please!
Don't you just dig the steel guitar ;-)
I'm thinking folks who enjoy this sound may also like September 67...
Where's my copy of "Cassandra on the Dancefloor" to upload...? (riffle)

I gave it an 8. First song from OTR that didn't make me lower the volume.

New Orleans seems a fitting place for Jesus to be nowadays. The place could use his salvation in more ways than one, and the ability to walk on water is certainly an added bonus...
If only there were numbers in the drop down lower than 1. Oh wait I can go back and listen to FF or JC and not listen to this crap.
