Downpresser man
Where you gonna run to
(3x)
All along that day
(CHORUS)
You gonna run to the sea
But the sea will be boiling
When you run to the sea
The sea will be boiling(2x)
All along that day
You gonna run to the rocks
The rocks will be melting
When you run to the rocks
The rocks will be melitng(2x)
All that day
So I said
CHORUS
You drink your big champagne and laugh(3x)
All along that day
I wouldn't like to be a flea
Under your collar man
(3x)
All along that day
You can run but you can't hide(3x)
Telling you all along that day
You gonna run to the Lord
Beggin' to hide you
(2x)
You gonna run to Jah
Beggin' to hide you
All, all along that day
And I said Downpresser Man
Where you gonna run to
Where you gonna run to Downpresser man
Where you gonna run to
I said all along
All along, along that day Downpresser man(4x)
Wait, Downpresser man
Where you gonna run to
Downpresser man
I don't know where you gonna run to
All along that day
Downpresser man
You can't run, you can't bribe Jah-Jah
Can't call him in a bar
Fe can drink some
Devil soup
Can't bribe him to run a car now
Can't test him faith
Downpresser man(5x)
Where you gonna run to
Downpresser man
You can't bribe no one
Them no want no money

Wow, you might want to lay off the pipe - or maybe join Hunter in his 'base'ment.
7 —> 8 just because I read the lyrics
I've still got the Sinead version of this rated a 10, though I'm finding I like this one more than before, so going +1 to 8 today, mainly based on how good it sounds on this newish 2.1 channel desktop audiophile setup.

LLRP!!

Agreed. One of the few times the cover is the better version. This is alright, but O'Connor's version is the better.
excellent song. too bad it will always be relevant.
hey Jelani - shut up and listen to the music…
The album release is 77, not 97 as Tosh was murdered in 87. The comments of late here on this song have veered waaaaaay past the song into politricks territory.
Sinead's cover is great, and while I like Tosh's OG version; the lyrics being so very relevant today,  it's not my favorite track of his. Stepping Razor and African, on this album as well as  Equal Rights are top notch tracks.

And in late December 2020, herr Trump golfs while unemployment benefits expire for 14 million Americans, Covid cases continue to surge, food lines get longer,  the eviction moratorium will expire on 12/31 displacing god knows how many people. There was a deal in place for a stimulus package signed off on by Congress and just in need of his signature.

But Trump threw a last minute wrench into the works demanding a $200o check to eligible Americans instead of the $600 all parties had already agreed to, including HIM.  This move was strictly to stroke his own ego and show that he still has power. He had little to no involvement in the legislation having checked out once he lost the election.

But yeah, tell us again how he's not self-centered. He's the poster boy for self-centered narcissists.

That Allende's policies were horrible is debatable, but the point is often in multi-party democracies it is rare to see more than 35% of the popular vote for any one party. This is the case in smaller European democracies and in some of the "Commonwealth" countries, and to a lesser extent in Asian democracies. The US is a glaring exception for having essentially a two-party system, but whatever. In these other democracies coalitions among parties to gain majorities in the lower houses are very common. So to suggest that a government is somehow illegitimately governing and setting policy when the winning party in the election got "only" 33% of the vote is nonsense. And to say that a government is not a dictatorship but just authoritarian, is kind of missing the point that also neither is a truly functioning democracy. The opposing "parties" in the Russian Duma are bought by the government and are more or less a rubber stamp for Putin's policies. Sure, that's not *exactly* a dictatorship, and not *exactly* accurate, either. But it's not exactly democracy as it's supposed to work -- and does work -- elsewhere. And sure, telling someone to go read a book feels good, but it can always work both ways, especially when you don't know what the other person has already achieved in his life. There are probably books you should read, too, that you haven't ...

Today, while driving my 82 year old Mom around on errands, we had to get to South Presa. A South Texas regional band, Los Number 3 Dinners did a version of "South Presa Man" as a riff on this. An old street downtrodden with time. We laughed as I reggaed a few refrains.
Then hear Tosh's Downpressor Man today on RP. Since I can't remember when.  *insert Twilight Zone theme here*
This album is outstanding. A must have for any collection and even more amazing on vinyl.

The only variant I've heard on RP, and I've been listening here since the Cretaceous, is Sinead O'Connor's coruscatingly angry version. A search reveals no other versions with the song title "Downpressor Man". Are there, perhaps, "variants" of the song with a different title?

THANKFULLY we don't have the Goldfinger cover....and I wouldn't be surprised if Miley Cyrus did it too.  One of the variants might be "Sinner Man" by Nina Simone (and others maybe too....?)

As a general rule, anyone that wants a song played less/removed from RP, etc., I think should have a replacement track in mind.

And I forget who recently suggested a "pay to not play" program; if you dislike a tune enough, cough up some dough and maybe BillG will listen!

Sinner man is an African American traditional spiritual song. The lyrics describe a sinner attempting to hide from divine justice on Judgement Day. The song has been dated to the turn of the 20th century.

The USA is the supreme example of a Quasi-democracy. A two party system allowing you to vote for the same 'politics' and nothing else. Thus your arguments are invalid.

True enough. However flawed or quasi the processes, these examples show why Madison was as concerned of the tyranny of the demos as he was of that of kings or warlords.

Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer (as The Wailers) recorded "Sinnerman" in the mid-60s during their time at Studio One.

Nina Simone's is called "Sinnerman", otherwise the words are the same. I like her use of piano so that there's tension, a sense of all those consequences closing in on the bad guy. (Oh, I dont think Nina included the flea verse or the run and hide verse) I really like Nina's version of Strange Fruit. Her unique voice adds to the haunting emotion of that song's subject matter.
I've gotten used to the version by that crazy baldhead: wishful Sinful O'Connor.
This rocks. Good anthem for current times. Sinead does it justice too in her cover of it! but the integrity was already there in the lyrics. Very cool heartfelt track.

sorry I missed this song. It is a very powerful song most of us, including myself, are not able to personally relate to. Peter stood up for what he believed in. This is one of, if not the best reggae albums of all time. Equal Rights, Downpressor Man, Stepping Razor, and Aparthied are four of the most intense songs you could hear on the same album. If you have one reggae cd in your collection-EQUAL RIGHTS should be the cd.
Never been a big reggae fan, but Peter Tosh has a permanent place in my music library... I prefer him to Marley. And Sinead, well, nice try.
I'm sorry I missed hearing this. I've never heard it, and I'm curious to hear how it compares with the version by Sinead. Judging by the feedback, it looks like hers is better. Can't wait to hear for myself someday.
Q: How is this song like Synyrd's Freebird? A: I don't care if I hear either one ever again.
