Funny how the two sides battle between the original vs this version. I’m definitely in the original camp. 😀 Both sides can agree that the song is a gem. Roland Orzabal wrote so many beautiful songs.

This is a truly worthy cover, although for me, the original is placed in a time of my life that makes it not to be equaled. I like the quirky background instrumentation on the original , and of course the old video with Curt dancing in the background, as seen through the window.

This is very true, but for every "minimalist" recording like this that just hits perfectly, you get at least double the number of "Smells Like Teen Spirit by Tori Amos" complete and utter misses.

I find Tears for Fears original 1000x better, as this added unnecessary layer of sugar coat/overblown emotions, heard far too many times in many solo performers.

Or simply put, sounds overly dramatic and whiny over something that was rather a genuine piece as in Tears for Fears.

Exactly - I knew the song when it first came out, and this version brought everyone's attention to the song; and many people discovered the original because of this one.

I agree it's a great cover, but the instrumentation in the original gives it a different mood. This one is exceptionally somber, which is fitting, but the original has that bit of extra 'feel' for me.

I like this song but it’s one of those songs that has been covered so many times the original artist is obscured. It makes the song somewhat sterile now. Of course this was the normal procedure for songs from the 40s through to the 80s but think the practice has had its time. Not big on Tears for Fears but I’ll go back to them every time for this song.

Somehow when this plays I hear a very heavy thrash version in my head that makes me want to jump around and dance.  I absolutely love it.  

I'll never know if I would love it as much if I didn't come to it from Donnie Darko, but I think I would.

Same for me, and I usually tend to be unforgiving to 80's covers, but this one is absolutely outstanding, and this man climbed the mountain from the most risky side with this almost a-cappella version, without betraying the emotion of the original.
