Funny how the two sides battle between the original vs this version. I’m definitely in the original camp. 😀 Both sides can agree that the song is a gem. Roland Orzabal wrote so many beautiful songs.

Came in to bump it up but I already had it at 10.   So I will say this instead... My daughter used this movie as a litmus test for possible boyfriends when she was in high school.... iykyk
This is a truly worthy cover, although for me, the original is placed in a time of my life that makes it not to be equaled. I like the quirky background instrumentation on the original , and of course the old video with Curt dancing in the background, as seen through the window.

This is very true, but for every "minimalist" recording like this that just hits perfectly, you get at least double the number of "Smells Like Teen Spirit by Tori Amos" complete and utter misses. 

But that's for a different discussion! This version of Mad World is just wonderful and amazing and perfect.
By far the best version, moody and poignant. 
Ruined by their label selling out the song to advertisers, in particular, hospital chains, back in the 2000s.

There is a version on Youtube of Curt Smith(of Tears For Fears) and his daughter doing this song and it is really nice. Makes ya' smile.
And my own bit: the lyrics spoke for themselves and didn’t need the almost saccharinely sorrowful pace of this version. It ruined the message.

Everyone has their preference on this song certainly.  I prefer this version.  Slower, more sparse.  I think it fits the song & lyrics better but it's just my opinion.
I find Tears for Fears original 1000x better, as this added unnecessary layer of sugar coat/overblown emotions, heard far too many times in many solo performers.

Or simply put, sounds overly dramatic and whiny over something that was rather a genuine piece as in Tears for Fears.

Exactly - I knew the song when it first came out, and this version brought everyone's attention to the song; and many people discovered the original because of this one.

I agree it's a great cover, but the instrumentation in the original gives it a different mood. This one is exceptionally somber, which is fitting, but the original has that bit of extra 'feel' for me.

This is such a good cover.  It seems to reflect the mood of the lyric even better than the original.  It's difficult for me to write that, but it's what I feel at this moment.
I like this song but it’s one of those songs that has been covered so many times the original artist is obscured. It makes the song somewhat sterile now. Of course this was the normal procedure for songs from the 40s through to the 80s but think the practice has had its time. Not big on Tears for Fears but I’ll go back to them every time for this song.

But this has to be a fricking 9 or 10 because it is a unique, haunting composition that taps right into some subterranean flow.

Just excellent.  Better than the original? Why worry about that, just take it for what it is; a super song, well sung.
I loved the original.  I love this one as well.  Oddly enough, this version seems to capture the emotion a bit better than Tears for Fears did with the original.

Somehow when this plays I hear a very heavy thrash version in my head that makes me want to jump around and dance.  I absolutely love it.  

I'll never know if I would love it as much if I didn't come to it from Donnie Darko, but I think I would.

Same for me, and I usually tend to be unforgiving to 80's covers, but this one is absolutely outstanding, and this man climbed the mountain from the most risky side with this almost a-cappella version, without betraying the emotion of the original.
