Most people wouldn't mind a voter ID if there was a compelling need, namely widespread voting fraud. The Republicans have never been able to prove such fraud.
Also, people would be more accepting of a voter ID if it were easier to obtain one. States throw up all sorts of obstacles to obtaining a photo ID. The Real ID law is another attempt at voter suppression.
